Title: Applications of Group von Neumann Algebras to the Study of Group Rings and Groups

Abstract: Given a countable group $G$, one can embed the complex group algebra $\mathbb{C}G$ into the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{N}(G)$. This embedding makes it possible to apply tools from analysis to study properties of both $\mathbb{C}G$ and $G$. In this talk, I will explain several applications of this approach.
