4月27日,法国科学院院士、欧洲科学院院士、法国索邦大学教授布诺瓦·佩尔塔姆一行来校访问。索邦大学数学学院院长萨米·穆斯塔法教授、法布里斯·贝图埃尔教授共同来访并受聘为我校讲席教授。校长韩杰才会见布诺瓦·佩尔塔姆一行,为萨米·穆斯塔法教授、法布里斯·贝图埃尔教授颁发聘书并佩戴校徽。副校长刘俭出席活动。
On April 27, Benoît Perthame, member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea and professor at Sorbonne University, led a delegation to visit Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). Professor Sami Mustapha, Dean of the UFR (Unité de Formation et de Recherche) of Mathematics at Sorbonne University, and Professor Fabrice Béthuel also visited and were appointed as Chair Professors of HIT. President Han Jiecai met with Benoît Perthame and his delegation, presented appointment certificates to Professor Sami Mustapha and Professor Fabrice Béthuel, and conferred the HIT university badges. Vice President Liu Jian attended the event.

Han Jiecai noted that HIT and Sorbonne University have long maintained close academic ties, and that the jointly established China–France Mathematics Elite Program is a key initiative in HIT’s international talent cultivation. He stated that Sorbonne University ranks among the world’s leading institutions in mathematics, while HIT possesses strong advantages in interdisciplinary integration of science and engineering as well as the integration of industry, education, and research. With highly complementary resources and tremendous cooperation potential, he expressed hope that this visit and appointment ceremony would serve as an opportunity to promote comprehensive cooperation in fundamental research, interdisciplinary innovation, joint talent cultivation, and regular scholar exchanges, so as to produce more original achievements, cultivate outstanding mathematics talent with global vision, and contribute to China–France educational exchange and global scientific progress.

Benoît Perthame stated that China currently places great importance on fundamental research, and that HIT is one of China’s leading science and engineering universities. Sorbonne University highly values its partnership with HIT, and cooperation between the two sides has already achieved remarkable results. He noted that the academic strength of HIT’s mathematics discipline and its collaborative team culture have laid a solid foundation for deeper cooperation. He expressed the hope of broadening collaboration in areas such as basic research, interdisciplinary innovation, and talent cultivation, further improving cooperation mechanisms, and elevating bilateral cooperation to a new level, thereby making greater contributions to China–France cultural exchange and academic collaboration.

On the evening of April 27, an academic lecture session was held in the Wentian Lecture Hall of Gewu Building. Professor Benoît Perthame delivered a lecture titled Alan Turing and Patterns in Nature, introducing the formation of Turing patterns and the profound mathematical principles behind them. This was followed by Professor Sami Mustapha’s lecture, French Mathematical Culture: A Tradition of Excellence and Abstraction, which provided an in-depth overview of the philosophy and history of the French mathematics education system, explaining how outstanding mathematicians such as Laurent Schwartz and Alexandre Grothendieck have inherited and advanced its traditions. The lecture session was chaired by Professor Wu Jian, Executive Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Division.

On the evening of April 28, during a discussion session with faculty members and students of the China–France Mathematics Elite Program, Professor Jacques Smulevici, Director of the Undergraduate Program of the Faculty of Mathematics at Sorbonne University, introduced the faculty’s curriculum, talent cultivation system, and rich academic traditions. Student representatives actively shared their academic experiences, research exploration, and reflections under the program’s distinctive training model. Professor Perthame and his colleagues listened attentively and provided thoughtful feedback and guidance based on their extensive academic experience. During the interactive session, lively discussions were held on topics of strong interest to students, including the integration and mutual influence of artificial intelligence and mathematics, as well as how to transition from foundational coursework to independent mathematical research. The experts’ insightful responses helped clarify students’ academic concerns, strengthened their confidence, and provided direction for their future engagement in high-level mathematical research.

4月29日,“哈工大—索邦大学数学日”学术交流活动顺利举行。布诺瓦·佩尔塔姆教授重点作题为《活体组织的数学模型与自由边界问题》的学术报告。他详细阐述了实体肿瘤发育等组织生长的多尺度描述方法,系统梳理了从微观细胞到宏观器官层面的各类数学模型及其内在联系。他深入讲解了流体力学方法中针对庞大细胞群落的可压缩模型,特别是基于带反应项的多孔介质型方程组;并在宏观层面引入了基于经典Hele-Shaw方程的不可压缩自由边界问题,清晰展示了如何在刚性压力极限下推导其弱形式并建立与其几何形态的联系。报告不仅向师生们展示了数学理论在生物医学中的前沿应用,还详细解析了多尺度分析、先验估计及不稳定性涌现等关键数学工具的精妙运用。
On April 29, the “HIT–Sorbonne University Mathematics Day” academic exchange event was successfully held. Professor Benoît Perthame delivered a keynote lecture titled Mathematical Models of Living Tissues and Free Boundary Problems. He elaborated on multi-scale approaches to modeling tissue growth, such as solid tumor development, and systematically reviewed mathematical models from microscopic cellular scales to macroscopic organ levels, clarifying their internal connections. He also introduced compressible models for large cell populations based on porous-medium-type equations with reaction terms, and further presented incompressible free-boundary problems derived from the classical Hele-Shaw equation under rigid pressure limits. The lecture demonstrated frontier applications of mathematics in biomedicine and highlighted the sophisticated use of key mathematical tools such as multi-scale analysis, a priori estimates, and the emergence of instabilities.
法布里斯·贝图埃尔教授分享了《分支运输中的聚集现象》,深入探讨了最优运输理论中由于密度增加降低成本而促成分支点的分形集现象,并重点解析了分支过程在临界与次临界状态下所面临的新挑战。埃马纽埃尔·特雷拉教授围绕最优控制理论中的“Turnpike性质”展开论述,展示了最优轨迹在优化及数值计算(如打靶法)中的核心应用。雅克·斯穆列维奇教授则带来了关于《非线性几何波动方程的时间周期解》的报告,解析了广义相对论中反德西特(Anti-de-Sitter)时空附近构造时间周期解的经典公开问题以及KAM理论的相关进展。
Professor Fabrice Béthuel presented Concentration Phenomena in Branched Transport, exploring fractal branching structures arising in optimal transport theory when increased density reduces cost, and addressing challenges in critical and subcritical regimes. Professor Emmanuel Trélat discussed the Turnpike Property in optimal control theory, emphasizing its central role in optimization and numerical computation methods such as shooting techniques. Professor Jacques Smulevici delivered a lecture on Time-Periodic Solutions of Nonlinear Geometric Wave Equations, analyzing the classical open problem of constructing time-periodic solutions near Anti-de Sitter spacetime in general relativity, along with related developments in KAM theory.

Professor Benoît Perthame is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea, and a leading scholar in nonlinear partial differential equations and biomathematics. He has been invited twice to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (including a one-hour lecture in 2024) and serves as Chair of the Advisory Committee for HIT’s China–France Mathematics Elite Program.
Professor Sami Mustapha is a leading scholar in harmonic analysis and a recipient of the French Order of Academic Palms. He has been deeply involved in educational reform in France and holds broad influence in the European mathematics and education communities.
Professor Fabrice Béthuel is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France and a leading scholar in partial differential equations and variational theory. He was an invited speaker at the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians, has received the Fermat Prize and other honors, and has made foundational contributions in areas such as harmonic maps.
Professor Emmanuel Trélat is a member of Academia Europaea, a member of the Institut Universitaire de France, and Director of the Jacques-Louis Lions Laboratory at Sorbonne University. A leading scholar in control theory, partial differential equations, and sub-Riemannian geometry, he was an invited speaker at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians, and his control algorithms have been directly applied to the Ariane launch vehicle guidance system.
Professor Jacques Smulevici is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France and a leading young scholar in partial differential equations and the mathematical theory of general relativity. He has made pioneering contributions in Einstein equations and black hole dynamics and is widely recognized as one of the most influential young academic leaders in the field.
