Abstract:

Embedding a group into a compact one means keeping only finite-dimensional representations; embedding it into a compact semigroup allows to keep all unitaries and often much more. The resulting coefficients form the space of weakly almost periodic funcitons, a space known to have an invariant mean even if the original group was non-amenable.

In the quantum case, the picture becomes much more complicated, but presents the same interest. I will speak of the current state of the problem.
