Abstract:We will review the theory by Cremona and his school on describing the modular symbols of Bianchi modular 3-folds associated to an imaginary quadratic field K. The problem is that their approach heavily depends on each particular K, and it seems that their techniques cannot be extended to give a general answer. In this talk, we follow an ideal of Loic Merel to describe modular symbols in general. We also motivate this question by considering a generalization of a conjecture of Romyar Sharifi to the Bianchi setting (this is work in progress with Jun Wang).
